Controls can be set at minimum to produce low-volume controllable distortion or increased a bit to achieve a warm tube overdrive sound. Set to maximum, its pronounced fuzz-tone combines with long sustain. The Distortion plus may be powered by batteries or an optional ECB03 AC adapter. Within the central areas of the Output and Distortion controls of the M-104 are some soft, clipped distortions that sound truly authentic, especially with a splash of reverb. Pushing the Distortion level up high produces some classic fuzz tones that are finding their way onto an increasing number of albums, in line with the current retro fascination. This distortion is an enjoyable alternative from LA saturation and thick, British crunch. The distortion can be tamed by using it with a warm crunch/overdrive sound as a base for some hip Hendrix sounds, and also to emulate Randy Rhoads' favorite deployment of his Distortion+.

Mxr M104 Distortion+ Effect Pedal Review

I just bought a Dunlop version of this distortion pedal today and I think its great. I had one back in the early '80s (ran it through a Peavey Mace, gains maxed on both channels, always used for leads...yeah,I miss the Mace) and I get the fat tones with singing sustain I remember, though now I'm using a Fender CT w/ a semi clean preset.

I was recently looking at a Guitar Player magazine from a few years ago that had a History Of Effects column and the MXR Distortion + was featured as part of this article. They stated it was more of an overdrive. I agree. Those guitarists looking for "metal" type distortion might be dissapointed.

The manual and press will state things like "Warm overdrive with the distortion lowered to...". I never worried about that. Back in the day both the output and distortion levels were always maxed and now I turn the output level to about 3/4 to match the level of my original signal.

edit--- While listening to the Saints - Vikings game yesterday, I was plugged in and played around with the controls on this stompbox and found them to be more useful than I thought.
With the Output control at 2:00 and the Distortion control at 1:00 the tone was indeed very warm and full, nice for some Trower tunes using Whitey, my funky strat copy.
Increasing the level of the Distortion control even a little would change the overall character of the tone very nicely.

The status LED is a welcome addition because I remember leaving my old one on accidentally (or thinking I turned it off) and the end of a song would be accompanied by screaming feedback.

Anyway, I'm really happy with this purchase and it happily shares space on my pedalboard w/ a Bad Monkey, Marshall BB2 and a Boss DS-1.

I probably should have mentioned earlier this pedal was Randy Rhoads fave for distorted tones. I recall a GP interview where he said "I use it alot". RIP, RR.
