I take electric guitar lessons in Chicago and am also in an ensemble class. I needed a little amp since I either walk 8 blocks to class or hop on a train to another venue to practice / play - and I don't have a roadie or a mule to help me carry everything! The mission: A great sounding blues, blues rock amp that would be light as a lunchbox and inexpensive. I tried the VOX battery operated amp and that was beat up by other little amps. It couldn't cut through the crowd. I didn't buy the Pathfinder since it was a bit heavy. I tried the Fender Mustang but if someone bumped it the silly effects would go haywire and get in turned on / around and I'd be playing something that sounded off or even horrible. I tried Peavy and Line6 but were voiced for heavy metal to my ears and not what I wanted. The Marshall is a nice sounding very simple (four knobs!) no frills practice amp that can cut through the noise of other students in class.

Now for a few bucks more Marshall makes a member of the MG line that is a little larger with an 8" speaker which sounds better by a major leap. If you're playing at home or transport doesn't mean anything to you then consider that one. I kept this one because of it being so portable and light and cheap as well as sounding good.

Its solid state and a Marshall. Is that a moral crime? I think not. This unit sounds more like a tube marshall than my VOX or Fender modelling software allows their amps to. I'm glad that Marshall addressed the needs of the market segment like me. This is my first Marshall but it won't be my last.
