Fender 24in Barstool Review

This is a very nice, reasonably priced, comfortable stool. Assembly is a little bit complicated, and the instructions really stink.

Twenty four inches tall is perfect for playing guitar, not a good height for a bar (the thirty six inch version is the proper one for bars). The seat rotates 360 degrees. The padding is decent. The red around the outside is that ultra sparkly shiny metallic red (if you have seen a Daisy Rock guitar, there you go). I like the simple Fender words on the top - also of slippery, shiny vinyl. If you want a barstool, look for the 30 inch stools.

The seat looks like it could take a beating for a long time. The legs and ring are really solid - perfect foot rest and should last a good long time.

Assembly - even the picture is a bit off compared to what was in the box. I've assembled four of these so here's my directions:

The hardware bag includes everything absolutely required to build this stool, even an Allen wrench and one of those flat stamped metal open end wrenches. Because the nuts are anti-back out (or what I used to call self locking nuts), they are pretty tough to tighten. I strongly recommend using a 3/8 drive socket wrench, the nuts are all 7/16th inch.

Divide up the hardware - there are 4 long Allen head bolts, 5 medium length (more on that in a second), and 4 short, and 9 nuts.

First step - they added a center hole to the two legs (not shown on the instruction sheet). Those 5 medium length bolts - there is one bolt slightly shorter than the other four. Use this shorter bolt to join the two legs. Put the bolt in from the top. Tighten this down really tight with your wrench.

Second step - attach the foot ring. Use the 4 long Allen head bolts and hand tighten the nuts inside the stool.

Third step - attach the spinning mechanism / turntable on the top. There is a small box with a plastic bag with a black square thing in it. You'll notice four slotted holes on the edge. Turn the top and the bottom part 45 degrees (so you can access the slotted holes on the bottom part). Now place this over the four holes on the top of the steel legs. Insert the 4 medium length Allen bolts. You'll have to wiggle the turntable around a bit to get it lined up. Now hand tighten the nuts on all four bolts.

Fourth step - Tighten all the nuts. Start at the foot ring using the Allen wrench to hold the bolt and your ratchet wrench to turn the nut. Snug up each nut first, then go back and really tighten the bolts. Now go back up to the top and tighten up the turntable. First snug all the bolts and then tighten them down.

Fifth step - attach the seat. Lay the seat down on the floor upside down - Fender logo down. Flip the legs over and align the slotted holes of the top of the turntable with the holes in the seat. Insert the 4 shortest Allen head screws and hand tighten them. Now finish them up really tight with the Allen wrench.

Bingo - your stool is now assembled. Unfortunately, out of the box the stool will be a little tippy (one leg set is a little longer than the other). That will straighten out after you sit on it once or twice.

This is a good sturdy stool. Not major difficult to assemble, but also not simple.

January 14, 2012 Update: I have four of these stools in the basement, yes call it a mancave. There's one I've used almost every day for over a year. The only wear is in the piping around the top edge, it has worn through at one small place (maybe one inch). Otherwise, these are super sturdy and have held up well. Ah no, we don't throw them around the room, jump up and down on them, or use them for battering rams - so your mileage might vary. Honestly, we just sit on the stools, exactly what they were designed for. I'm surprised, all the bolts and nuts are still tight. They're a great stool, I'd buy them again in a heartbeat. They are exactly the perfect height for sitting around a six foot long thirty six inch high workbench.

August 20, 2013 Update: Still just as good as over a year ago. I'd buy these again in a second.
