Back when I was learning to play bass, my frustrated teacher suggested I start using a pick (as I was so bad I think he couldn't take it anymore--watching me try to play bass the way my idols did, sans pick). I was specifically advised to try a hard felt pick, whIch I had never heard of. I was tired of not improving so I begrudgingly bought one and gave it a try. Seems my teacher was right, this was just what I needed to get somewhat competent, and I began to improve. These particular felt picks are the best I've found. Some only last for one gig, and they shed all over your bass (which is easy to clean). The upside is they give you a tone in-between fingers and a hard pick, which I find to be perfect. Rubber picks are not my cup of tea, I don't like the feel and lack of attack. Hard picks can be tough to grip for three hours of playing and have too much attack for me--but, maybe that is just me. Give these a try for bass playing, you just might like them. They will give you a sound that no one else has, especially if you string your bass with flats--my string of choice. One star demerit for spotty quality control--some of these picks can be very soft and last no time at all.
