These strings are incredible. Why haven't you bought them yet?

Long version:

Oh my goodness, wow. I absolutely love these strings. I even love how they have red cloth wrapping on the end of the string up by the headstock. The tone of these strings? To die for. These are the best bass strings I have ever used.

Tone:

Some words to describe the tone are as follows: biting, growling, aggressive, articulate, and bright. These strings were made for players who want to be heard, who want to cut through the mix. These strings have great low end, but that's not the impressive part. What's so impressive about these strings is that when a note is played, the combination of midrange and high harmonics give the tone a metallic, almost piano-like quality. Good for slap bass? Goodness yes.

Versatility:

These strings may be bright and audacious, but they can also be tamed by simply turning down the tone knob on the bass. They will never be as mellow as flatwound strings, but they definitely create a more subdued, smooth sound when the tone is rolled off. Because of this, they are incredibly versatile. They can be used to produce both articulate, biting tones that can cut through the mix and tones that will put the bass in the background.

Drawbacks:

If you are a sloppy player, or a beginner, these strings may not be for you. They demand a very precise player, as every fret buzz, wrong note, and finger slide (that "eek" noise when the finger is moved along the string) will be accentuated. That being said, these strings will teach you to play with more accuracy.

Some people say these strings are rough, but I don't think they feel any rougher than other brands of strings. That being said, like all roundwound strings, these will eat frets and fretboard wood over time. I recommend using these strings on a bass with medium jumbo or jumbo frets for the sake of longevity. Also, don't even think about putting these on a fretless; they will absolutely destroy the wood (but that is true of all roundwound strings).

Conclusion:

Buy them. The pros of these strings are so incredible that the cons don't really even matter. I will be singing the praise of Rotosound strings until they stop selling them, or until I die. Hopefully the second option happens first.

Intellitouch PT40 Rechargeable Tuner Review

The unit is being used on an electric bass. I have not tried on an any guitars as of yet.
The Good: The major advantage is that I can tune between songs if necessary. The off/on switch helps conserve battery life. I have used the unit for about a month and so far have not had to recharge it. This includes two weekly band practices and a couple of gigs. The color change from red to green when you are in tune is really easy to see in the often poorly lit bars we play.
The Not so Good: At least for bass, it does not work as well as expected on an open low E. I find that a harmonic tone works more quickly. Additionally, the unit does appear to search for the actual note played in general more than I would have expected. This makes tuning slower than expected.
Conclusion: I have a 25 year old Korg Chromatic tuner and the old beast is still a lot quicker to use than the Intellitouch PT40. I will continue to use the old Korg as my main tuner for setting intonation and when being tethered to a tuner is not an issue. However, the head stock tuner is quite useful for on stage applications. I will continue to use it on stage at least for now. As to any durability issues, I have not had the unit long enough to tell.
I have now had the unit for several months. I did forget to pay attention to the battery life indicator and it did run down during a gig. This is my fault and not an issue with the tuner. The low "E" issue is a bit annoying but I use this tuner exclusively for gigs (and live full band practices) anyway since it is really convenient. As stated earlier, however this unit is not particularly useful for setting intonation. I might buy another one when this one inevitably breaks (made in China stuff usually has a shorter life span than things used to when they were made in either the US or Japan). I would however look around to see what is out there before I do.

Benefits:
- Very amp-like tones
- Various tonal options (LP: low peak = Tweed-like, HP: high peak = Marshall-like)
- Very uncompressed gain (this was what I was seeking so I list it as a benefit.) and a lot of it
- 9 - 18 volt usage (18 volts sounds smoother, less fizzy in both settings. 9 volt sounds great too, but LP setting leaves a little to be desired at the lower voltage. HP at 9 volts = very cool.)

Drawback:
- personally, none.
- Very little compression (again, I like this but many may not. This sounds nothing like a Fulldrive 2 so steer clear if that's what your going for)

Jim Dunlop 9002P Dun Plys Wh Thmb Med 4/Pk Review

When I placed the order, I read "package of 4" while looking at the photo. I had the impression that I was ordering a set of one thumb pick and three finger picks. Not so. I received a package of four medium Dunlop thumb picks. Since I had already ordered a set of stainless steel finger picks from the UK, I accepted the order; but I did go back to Amazon to check the product description. What I saw was a photo of a finger pick and a thumb pick, which leads the consumer to believe that the "set of 4" picks is a set of 1 thumb pick and 3 finger picks, which is what most guitar players use. In the product description, however, it says that the package consists of four thumb picks.

My only other complaint is that I didn't order large instead of medium. The medium thumb picks are too tight and a bit uncomfortable to use because of the pinching feeling of wearing a too small pick. That was partly my fault, though. With no idea what Dunlop considered "medium" size, I was just guessing when I ordered them. To me they felt like they should have been considered "small".

They do deliver the sound that I was looking for, though; so now, with my new knowledge, I will probably give these picks to my young nephew and order a set of large thumb picks for myself.

AS A REFERENCE POINT for those considering buying the Dunlop thumb pick, I offer the following information that may help:

My thumb, where the pick should ride, is an ellipse of approximately 0.906" across X 0.775 deep" (29/32" x 25/32" or 2.3cm x 1.9cm).

On the Medium Dunlop thumb pick, the loop that goes onto the thumb measures approximately 0.690" across X 0.456" deep (11/16" x 15/32" or 1.75cm x 1.16cm).

I have no dimensions for Dunlop's Small or Large thumb picks.

My recommendation is that if your thumb measures slightly smaller than the medium thumb pick, then get a Small pick. If your thumb measures more than 0.040" to 0.060" (1/32" to 1/16" or 1mm to 1.5mm) larger both ways than the Medium pick, then you should try a Large pick.
