Product Description

Chances are good that you haven't put much thought into your acoustic guitar's nut. Check out the Graph Tech PQL-5000-00 Tusq XL Nut for Fender-style Guitars and you may have a new respect for the little guy. Traditional nut materials can become brittle over time, leading to broken strings or snags when you're tuning. Graph Tech's Tusq XL nuts are made with Teflon, the slipperiest substance on Earth, so your strings will slide through it effortlessly. The Telfon-infused material is also very resonant, so your string vibrations will be transferred to your guitar's body more easily. The result? Improved tone and enhanced harmonics when playing open strings and chords. For the price, we can't think of a better upgrade for your guitar - give your guitar the gift of a Graph Tech Tusq XL slotted nut today!

Graph Tech TUSQ XL Fender Style Slotted Nut Review

This worked for me. The strings don't bind. Guitar returns to correct pitch after using tremolo.

Now, these things are also possible with bone nut, but the thing is that it was easier to do it with TUSQ XL, probably because the material is so slippery.

You still need to sand and adjust slot depth/angle and everything, but you'll spend less time. I think TUSQ XL is a very good convenience product.

As far as the tone is concerned, I don't think there's much difference between this and bone, but there might be some. I've used this for only one guitar and it's difficult for me to tell the difference when I cannot compare two things side by side. (BTW this is not the case with another slippery material, i.e. Delrin/acetal, which to my ears removes some sparkle of the wound strings.)

Other things to note:

The bottom radius curvature of this is about 7.5 inches (it might be 7.25, I don't have 7.25 inch template so I cannot say for sure). If you have a Fender guitar with either 7.25 or 9.5 inches radius finger board, or G&L with 7.5 inches, this is a perfect thing. Just remove the center tab (I don't know why the tab is there anyway) and you're already close. Use double sided sticky to attach a small sheet of sandpaper on your finger board between the nut slot and the 1st fret, and sand until the bottom is evenly covered by scratches.

The thickness of this is almost 1/8 inches already. Be very slow to sand the thickness.

And lastly, nut is not the only thing that prevents your guitar from returning to correct pitch. Check string trees, tuning machines, saddles, knife edges, and tremolo posts/screws.
