Product Description

Developed exclusively for the Taylor GS Mini, the ES-Go is a magnetic soundhole pickup that anyone can easily add to their GS Mini without the help of a guitar technician. All you need is a screwdriver and a few minutes. Once the ES-Go pickup is in place, the GS Mini can be plugged into an acoustic amp, PA system or recording device for a great amplified acoustic sound.

Taylor ES Go Pickup for GS Mini Review

There is not a bigger fan of the Taylor Guitar Company than I. I currently own three Taylors and have bought and sold many more. I love my GS Mini and really wanted the ES Go to be an easy, quality fix to the amplification needs of my Mini. It looks like such a promising solution. But alas, it is not.

First, the pros: installation is a breeze. I had the ES Go installed in less than 15 minutes. So it is very easy to install and without a battery, it is easy to maintain. It is unobtrusive in the sound hole and after a few minutes, you forget that it's there. Kudos to Taylor for coming up with this installation system.

Next, the cons: it doesn't sound good. That's a pretty major flaw considering that this unit is designed for re-presenting acoustic sound through an amp or PA. Beware that this system is magnetic and therefore produces a 60 cycle hum in many (if not most) environments. At my home studio, in my Marshall AS50D acoustic amp, the hum was faint, but noticeable. Through my Line 6 POD XT Live into headphones, the hum was much, much louder. Here, it verged on distortion. My Stratocaster produced a cleaner sound than the ES Go did. I took it to a friend's house and it hummed there. I plugged it in through the PA at one of my gigging venues and it hummed there too. I called Taylor customer service about this and they could only say that if the electrical outlet is not grounded properly, then the ES Go is going to hum no matter what you do. I fail to see how this is helpful to the traveling musician. Am I to deal with a noticeable hum if I gig at bars, restaurants, and coffeehouses? Am I supposed to ask my audience to ignore this buzz in their ears as I play? Considering that the Mini is a travel guitar, I find this defect unforgivable and unworthy of being mentioned alongside other products in the Expression System line.

So I returned the ES Go and installed a K&K Pure Western Mini pickup and could not be happier with the results. Perhaps Taylor will have this issue fixed in 3-5 years like they did with the 1st generation Expression System in their standard line. Until then, in my opinion, you would be better off with another application to amplify your GS Mini.
