Product Description

The Korg AW-2+ offers convenient clip-on tuning for players of transposing instruments. Providing an articulate mounting system, an adjustable display angle, a built-in backlight for visibility, a great fit on nearly any instrument, the AW2+ delivers highly accurate, stress-free tuning in any situation. The AW-2+ clip-on orchestral tuner is the ultimate tuner for the band or orchestral musician. Many orchestral instruments do not sound in the concert key; these are called transposing instruments. The unique Transpose feature of the AW-2+ lets players of transposing instruments transpose the tuner response as well, allowing these instruments to be quickly tuned in their respective keys. Pressing the Trans button will cycle through the transpose choices; F ? B? ?E? ? C (C = not transposed/concert key). Light is also key. The amount of light available to a performer varies greatly. Dim locations such as a stage or orchestra pit, glaring outdoor sunlight, evening dusk, or night-time illumination are often far from ideal. The AW-2+'s backlit meter provides three illumination modes: Off for brightly-lit locations, Soft mode for somewhat dim locations where you want to conserve battery power, and Auto for bright illumination in locations of poor visibility. This ensures that you'll be able to tune perfectly under any conditions. In addition, Auto mode automatically switches to the lower brightness of the Soft mode when there has been no sound input or button operation for approximately ten seconds, preventing unnecessary battery consumption. Attention has been paid to numerous details to ensure ideal tuning, such as a large display font and a meter that clearly indicates the pitch discrepancy.

Korg AW2PLUS Orchestral Clip-On Tuner Review

There's not a whole lot to say about this tuner. I got it because I'm starting out with violin and the one I got seems to have issues staying properly tuned, so being able to spot check the violin easily and have it clipped to the violin for easy reference while tuning seemed like a great design.

Unforunately, the arm of the tuner and the ball joint in it seem somewhat flimsy, and would end up flopping around a fair bit during usage. This included at times putting itself in positions that required me to stop what I was doing to adjust it so I could see the display. The other bit of disappointment was that I saw the picture that showed the tuner reading the A note with a display of 440 Hz in the upper left corner and assumed that the tuner would provide a numeric readout of the note's frequency for additional precision, which turned out not to be the case. The only tuner I've found so far that does this is the 'gStrings' tuner app I have on my phone, but it requires the violin to be played loudly in order to pick up the note, which is not ideal when trying to practice late at night. To be fair the product description did not say this was the case, so that was on me, but I would have been a lot more excited about this tuner if it had this feature.

As far as the actual tuning capability goes, it does exactly what it says, and it matches up well in performance to other tuners I have as far as accuracy. The option to be able to tune the instrument in piezo mode (without addition cords + independent of the environment's noise level) is extremely nice as well, and the adjustable back light makes the tuner flexible to use in a variety of locations.

All in all, it was an impulse purchase since I have other tuners that work well, so at the moment I'm not planning to try another one to see if it was bad luck or bad design that the joint doesn't hold its position well. If I do end up doing so somewhere down the road and the joint holds up well, I'll revisit this review and bump it up to 5-stars.
